The case against a Monk main

There are obviously plenty of people that, based on the rumours, speculation and complete guess work, plus a small sprinkling of facts (What? you think that I'm exaggerating? :D) who are considering at least the possibility of changing their main to a Monk come the launch of Mists.

I'm sure there are a whole variety of reasons that people might do this, which I wont even attempt to explore, but in the end how successful such changes are will depend on where you are in the curve, how much of your own research you are planning to do, and how much you are prepared to work at it.

The curve.
Do you plan to stockpile leather heirlooms for your pandaren? Are you going to take a week off work at expansion release to powerlevel through as much as you can?  If you are, then you aren't going to have the safety net that you do for the established classes and specs.  I could roll a holy pally tomorrow (wait, I did that only last week :D), and I could find every conceivable talent choice, spec, rotation, cooldown usage and log analysis, plus a whole heap of things I have forgotten, and by the time that pally got to raiding, or even heroics, even if that was a week later, I would know what I needed to do. Google, EJ, and every other blogger under the sun who might have an opinion could be devoured, dissected and consumed.  Popular choices could be examined and help could be sought from other, established players.  This will not be possible with a Monk for weeks. probably MONTHS after the expansion is released. On the other hand, if you are planning a lesuirely trip to max level, where you may or may not raid, and no one is relying on you, go ahead, knock yourself out. have fun, and enjoy!

If you are planning on powerleveling, and you already have a regular raid spot, you need to understand that you could be holding your raid group back from raiding by playing at less than your best, with an unfamiliar class or class and role. At the very least, you should talk to your guild mates about it. No point in putting all that work in to find that you are the 14th monk healer in your guild :D

Research.
If you are the theorycrafting type, it won't matter if you don't have access to the established resources because you will do the work yourself. (as an aside, if you do, PLEASE blog about it so that YOU might become the resource! :) ). you will crunch numbers, see spreadsheets of figures in your dreams and you will lose sleep over whether n.1 DPS is acceptable or whether you need n.204. Whether you can stack haste till your eyes bleed or whether you need exactly 14,203 haste and NO MORE. If this does not sound like you, I would suggest that changing mains and expecting to be competitive and ready to raid in a short time is ... optimistic at best.

Finally, effort.
Regardless of the theorycrafting, are you prepared to use whatever resources may be available, spend large amounts of money redoing some minor (or not so minor) element of your character? Are you prepared to spend a LOT of time out of the game, as well as in it? If the answer to all of these is yes, you are possibly ready to give up your current comfortable main and switch to a  Monk. Possibly., but probably not! :D
